Gold (XAUUSD)

Gold quoted against the US dollar, XAUUSD: a deep, liquid market that trades almost around the clock and moves on rates, the dollar and fear.

On a trading account gold is quoted like a currency pair: XAUUSD, one troy ounce of gold priced in US dollars. XAU is the ISO code for gold, and the troy ounce, 31.1 grams, is the unit the whole market quotes in. A one dollar move in the price is 100 points on the chart, which is why gold strategies talk in points rather than pips.

The underlying market is enormous and mostly over the counter. The World Gold Council puts the London OTC market at roughly seventy percent of global notional trading, with the US futures market and the Shanghai Gold Exchange as the other two centres. Through a broker, the price you trade is a contract derived from that market, open from the Sydney morning to the New York close with a short daily break.

Gold moves on three things above all: real interest rates, the US dollar, and fear. Rising rates make a metal that pays nothing less attractive. A weaker dollar makes it cheaper in every other currency. War, banking stress and inflation scares push money into it. Those drivers make it trend hard, range for weeks, and jump on a headline.

Most Javlot strategies trade gold, and the asset class tag is derived from the actual trade history, not declared. The tag reads Gold only when the history is only gold.
